Clayspace Masterclass 2016 Series

Tuesday, 11 October 2016

Clayspace is pleased to announce the hosting of a masterclass series of workshops by four of Central Victoria's esteemed potters: Garry Bish, Graham Masters, Barry Singleton and Tom Cockram. These master potters will demonstrate and share their wealth of knowledge through a series of demonstration workshops to be held over two weekends in late October at the Clayspace studio in East St, Daylesford, Victoria.

The Masterclass series was inspired by the Clayspace road trip which included a visit to the to the Shepparton Art Gallery during the Shepparton Ceramics Award. During the road trip we visited these artists in their studios, where they generously shared their studio spaces, knowledge and experience which spans over four decades, and we now want to share this with you!

Clayspace also hosted the Clunes Ceramic Award guest judge and artist Mr Hyang Hyo last year in a sell-out two day workshop which attracted participants from all over Australia.

These two ideas naturally merged, seeding the concept to host a series of workshops by Central Victoria's top ceramic artists. Of these long established Victorian potters Desiree Radi Mansbridge, founding member of Clayspace says, 'These incredible artists have ridden the highs and lows of the ceramic industry and are what we like to call a potters potter! Just by watching these artists at work and their culmination of years of skill at play is enriching to witness'

As a ceramic cooperative Clayspace's mission is to generate an ongoing creative hub, enabling the exchange and sharing of resources, ideas, knowledge and skill in the making of objects from clay.

Garry Bish who has recently completed a Ph.D. and teaches at RMIT specialises in a diverse range of unique contemporary vessels with a focus on creating spatial relationships within the form, Gary will be sharing with us all his mold making techniques, with a running commentary detailing his wide ceramic knowledge.

Graham Masters has a pottery career spanning over 40 years, from the highly collectable Maldon Pottery to the Bendigo Pottery and his own Sweenies Creek Pottery in Strathfieldsaye just outside Bendigo, where he is renowned for his low relief scenes etched into pottery which he has patented as his own invention. Graham Masters will be demonstrating his practical tips and inventive tricks from the wheel through to his secrets in etched surface design.

Barry Singleton's ceramics are Japanese inspired and yet uniquely his and the simplicity of his beautiful forms so gracefully balanced resonate the aesthetic of Japanese austerity. Barry in fact worked and studied in Japan in 1976 with the master potter Katsu Yasa Ogawara, at Hashima kiln in Kurashiki, a region renowned for the Bizen style. Barry will be demonstrating throwing from the hump and tool making.

Tom Cockram established a thriving pottery 'Potters Croft' in Hepburn, the adjacent township to Daylesford, in the early 80's. Tom's throwing skills are exquisite and he is famed for his well fitted lidded forms. It is said that there is nothing quite like a Tom Cockram tea pot! Tom is master of glazes and his workshop will reflect his skill and knowledge in his expertise in this area.

These intimate and up close workshops are fantastic value at a $100 per day investment or enrol in all 4 Masterclasses for a $300 by becoming a Clayspace member. For details on how to become a member contact us on clayspacedaylesford@gmail.com

Classes will run 10-4 with a break for lunch. Daylesford is a picturesque mineral spring’s township nestled on the edge of forests in Victorian Central Highlands. The workshops coincide with Artober, an arts festival in which the township's thriving arts community come together to celebrate its art culture.

Clayspace wish to thank Potters Equipment and Walkers Ceramics for their sponsorship of what promises to be a fantastic debut event for the Masterclass 2016 series.

Oh Hyang Jong at Clayspace Studio

Thursday, 3 December 2015

energy is never lost just moved*

Clay is a universal language that enables conversation and connection across cultures. South Korean potter Oh Hyang Jong demonstrated this concept before a capacity crowd at the Clayspace studio on East Street, Daylesford, on 15 and 16 September.

Mr Oh throwing off the hump using a kick wheel.

Mr Oh preparing slabs by stretching the clay on the floor.

Day one began quietly but over the course of the first day and into the next the energy gathered momentum until the studio was engulfed in a sense of purpose and creativity. It was like a whole-body mediation as people dipped in an out of the action, some watching almost trancelike as he spun bowl after bowl off the kick wheel, others on their haunches on the ground wedging clay snakes for winding into onggi, a traditional Korean vessel dating back to 4000-5000 BC. Some of us had a go at adding the clay snakes to the developing forms with varying degrees of success.

Mr Oh adding coils.

creating a pot is harnessing the energy

of the clay and uniting it with

the energy of the creator

Mr Oh talked about his work in his native Korean while Ellie Lee Minsoo translated the concepts. The indefatigable Yong Mira provided technical support. Together he/we made voluptuous forms with no base and no purpose other than to give external form to the energy invested. Neville French remarked on their similarity to the trunks of ancient banksias. The forms that survived our ministrations ranged in size from about 80cm to 1.3m each imprinted with evidence of our endeavours.

Mr Oh and Mira.

the connection between the clay and the body

 is very important

On day two, Ann Ferguson from Castlemaine brought her gas-powered weed killer to dry out the pots so more coils could be added. The element of fire engenders a primal energy to any situation and this combined with the circular dance required to place the clay generated a thrilling urgency to the process.

Drying out pots by burning newspaper.

As the finale approached, Neville French and Kim Haughie made slips for Mr Oh while the rest of us were invited to graffiti the largest vessel. The red and white slips were poured into plastic bags before a corner was nipped off in the style of a homemade icing bag. Mr Oh concluded the workshop by squirting slip over the pot with enthusiastic abandon in a final creative outpouring.

Oh Applying slips to the largest of the vessels.

Mr Oh’s workshop was a generous embrace that reignited a gentle fire in me – one that has smouldered ever since. The experience has become a touchstone for my ceramics practice and I have returned to it whenever my own fire has seemed to languish.
